England Airpark has put an online petition on its website that asks for support in opposing Air Force plans to disband the Louisiana Air National Guard 259 Air Traffic Controller squadron, whose airman man the control tower at Alexandria International Airport.
Supporters can log onto www.englandairpark.org and click on "Support the Effort," which has a photo of 259th airmen and the airport.
The Air Force told England Airpark officials in March about plans to disband the 110-airman stationed at the airport. The air park this week opted to take the issue public, and is enlisting the help of legislators, the state's congressional delegation, the Louisiana National Guard, local officials and area residents in building support to keep the 259th here.
The 259th conducts air control operations 24 hours a day, seven days a week for commercial and military flights in and out of Alexandria.
